Encounters between cultures are also encounters between knowledge systems. This volume brings together a number of case studies that explore how some knowledge in cultural contact zones becomes transient, evanescent, and ephemeral. The essays examine various aspects of cultural, especially colonial, epistemic exchanges, placing special emphasis on the fate of those knowledges that are not easily appropriated by or translated from one cultural sphere into another and thus remain at the margins of cross-cultural exchanges. In addition, the imposition of colonial power is unthinkable without the strategic deployment and use of knowledge; most colonial states, including those of Germany in the Baltic and in West Africa, were knowledge-acquiring machines - yet, acquisition always includes rejection, detainment and subjugation of recalcitrant epistemes. Bringing together insights from various scholarly disciplines, including literary studies, history, historical anthropology, and political science, the essays in this volume investigate how different or unfamiliar knowledge was, and in some cases still is, disarticulated by being belittled, discredited, and demonized. But they also show the strategies of resilience deployed by subjugated and subaltern people: the ways in which certain materials have escaped the coloniality of knowledge - how fragments and shards of other epistemologies remain inscribed in the polyphony and fuzziness of intercultural documents and archives.

Russia returned to Latin America, former President Medvedev said in 2010. The study uses a multidimensional geopolitical approach to examine how this intensification of relations between Russia and three Latin American countries, Ecuador, Cuba and Brazil, came about. Based on findings from practical politics and academic work, the author provides a definition of the hitherto vague concept of 'strategic partnership' and traces the development of these partnerships in the period 1992-2017 using a process-oriented method.

"Political (In)Justice compares the legal aspects of political repression in three recent military regimes: Brazil (1964-1985), Chile (1973-1990), and Argentina (1976-1983). By focusing on political trials as a reflection of each regime's overall approach to the law, Anthony Pereira argues that the practice of each regime can be explained by examining the prior relationship between the judiciary and the military."--Jacket.

The first volume of the Bibliografia Ladina covers the entire Ladin Literature from the beginnings up to 1945. A total of 1072 entries, including manuscripts and parts of text, is ordered by authors and contains additional information regarding the date of their origin, the place and date of publication, the publication history, the idiom as well as the digital availability of the individual texts. Several indices (e.g. of the incipits) are included. Thus, this bibliography can either be used as a supplement to the first volume of the Geschichte der ladinischen Literatur (The History of Ladin Literature – Scripta Ladina Brixinensia III/1) or as an independent research tool.
